 Sarah Ophelia Colley Cannon
October 25, 1912 March 4, 1996
Sarah Cannon Sarah Cannon, creator of the beloved character Minnie Pearl, understood the impact of a cancer diagnosis. She worked tirelessly promoting the importance of cancer education, screening and early detection. She unselfishly shared her name in part because she believed cancer should be as recognizable as her famed straw hat with the dangling price tag.
For more than four decades, the irrepressible Minnie Pearl and the soft spoken Sarah Ophelia Cannon lived right next door to one another beneath the flower-decked brim of Minnies trademark straw hat sharing a warmth, wit, and honesty from the same mind and heart.
Sarah Cannon received the American Cancer Societys National Courage Award in 1987 in recognition of her dedicated efforts. During her tenure on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry she received numerous accolades from her fans and peers in the entertainment industry.
Today her memory is honored by all those who receive care through the comprehensive cancer services at The Sarah Cancer Cannon Center.

Treatment
We offer patients the benefits of all major treatment methods, including surgery, radiation oncology and medical oncology.
Medical Oncology
The medical oncologists at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center use powerful cancer-fighting drugs, hormones and immuno-stimulants to help the body stop or slow the growth of malignant cells. Chemotherapy is a therapeutic method utilizing drugs that interfere with the cancer's ability to reproduce and grow.
Surgery & Minimally Invasive Technologies
The inpatient and outpatient surgical suites at Horizon Medical Center are equipped for the most advanced surgical procedures, including video-guided, microscopic and laser surgery and radio-frequency ablation.
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy/ Radiation Oncology
The Sarah Cannon Cancer Center provides conventional oncology services as well as Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. IMRT is one of the newest technologies available and Horizon is offering this service with the Varian Clinac 21 EX Linear Accelerator with 3-D Conformal and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. This computerized system controls the high-energy x-ray beam in order to conform the treatment to the tumors shape and volume. This minimizes the damage to surrounding healthy tissue making a tumor that was once untreatable, treatable. IMRT treats irregularly shaped lesions in the direct vicinity of critical structures.
|
The advantages of high resolution IMRT include:
- The highest level of patient comfort with less side effects from radiation
- Superior dose distributions with simultaneous improvements in dose conformation
- Critical structure avoidance and target dose homogeneity

Nuclear Medicine
The Nuclear Medicine Department at Horizon Medical Center provides treatment for patients with B-cell non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (Bexxar or Zevalin). Radiation, whether it is used internally or externally, utilizes high-energy particles and/or rays to destroy cancer cells. Internal radiation, which is given by attaching a radioisotope to a monoclonal antibody which is then injected through an IV, is offered at Horizon with the use of Bexxar or Zevalin.
Clinical Research Trials
Through the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center, patients have access to the nations largest community-based oncology treatment and research program, coordinated by the Sarah Cannon Research Institute. Formed in October of 2004, the Sarah Cannon Research Institute provides alternative, innovative treatment options and greater access to clinical trials. To learn more about the Institutes list of open protocols, please call (615) 986-4300.
